My name is Rebecca Slyder and I'm the beekeeper at Mountain Woman Honey! My apiary is a one woman operation (plus one hound dog named Adele) and we're based out of lovely Montrose, Colorado. For those who don't know the area, we're at the foothills of the San Juan Mountains in western Colorado. My bees are located at an organic orchard that overlooks these beautiful mountains. They couldn't bee happier! <3
My love for bees and agriculture started since birth. The biggest influence was my grandparents who were also based in this area. My grandpa Jackson was a big advocate for using natural resources to fight pests and weeds instead of the heavy uses of pesticides. He also was a beekeeper and loved sharing his knowledge of bees. My grandfather kept leafcutter bees for pollination for his crops. It was in this time that I learned about my love for bees just like my grandfather.
It has taken a couple decades to make this dream happen but I am now here and focused on this passion once again. I have focus my bee operation on the European Honey Bee for honey production and pollination for the local apple orchards and alfalfa fields.
Mountain Woman Honey first started back in 2015 as a backyard hive and has been growing ever since. Since I have started my apiary, I find myself offering more than honey and wax products. I now have extended my services for swarm removals, beekeeping mentorship, teaching how to make homemade homeopathic products, and cooking with honey as a sugar substitute.
It's more than a business name, it's who I am. Yes, this beekeeper is a mountain woman in her spare time! From an early age, my love for the mountains ran deep within my heart. As a child I remember the days of exploring with my grandfather in the San Juan Mountains and seeing the alpine tundra full of wildflowers. We would spend our days out hiking, fishing, camping, exploring, and loving all the wonderful things mother nature had to offer. These days have never left me. I now have dedicated my life to learning more about the outdoors through rock climbing, ice climbing, mountaineering, hiking, canyoneering, backpacking, and backcountry skiing. Currently, I have climbed 47 out of the 58 total, 14,000' peaks climbed in Colorado. My future plans are to explore the peaks of Patagonia.
When any person spends time in the wilderness it doesn't take long to notice climate change and the impact humans cause to our environment. Back in 2011, I had my first encounter with the documentary Vanishing of the Bees during my environmental studies course in college. After seeing the film I knew I wanted to take action. It impacted me in a way that nothing had before. I decided to be more proactive by joining various organizations that care about the environment. I also knew I wanted to be more proactive about helping the bees. Up to this point, I only knew about Leafcutter bees from my grandfather but not European honey bees! So after a few beekeeping classes, permits, much research, and saving funds for equipment, I became a beekeeper in 2015.
Yes it's true, the honey is sweet but my first love is helping the bees and protecting the environment. I have since joined many clubs that support the protection of the outdoor places I love. I want to keep these places going and keep it wild for generations to come. Some of the organizations that I have joined I highly recommend are listed below. Most of us don't have the time or money but there are plenty of little things we can do to help. Some ways to help can be through donations, memberships, volunteering, attending events, educating others and/or our youth, being an advocate, or promoting these organizations to help meet their goals.
